What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s Neuroma is a thickening of tissue around a bundle of nerves usually in between the 2-3 toes or the 3-4 toes. It is quite painful and can be quite debilitating when trying to walk or run. Sometimes it feels like a sharp pain or a burning type of pain and tingling especially when walking barefoot. Women are more likely than men to experience morton’s neuroma and it is thought that this is because of high heeled shoes and the adverse pressure caused on the ball of the foot.People who have high arched feet (pes cavus) are prone to Morton’s Neuroma because similarly with high heels there is a lot of pressure on the ball of the foot. High impact sports that include sudden stops and starts and ball of the foot action can also cause this ball of the foot pain.

Morton's Neuroma Symptoms

Morton's Neuroma symptoms include tingling and sharp pain. It is quite often described as feeling like stepping on a pebble and the pain seems to be better once shoes are removed. Toes may feel a burning or numbing sensation as well. Sometimes it may actually feel like the toes are broken and a “crunchy” feeling is described.

Morton’s Neuroma Treatment

Morton's Neuroma treatment includes several things you can try at home as well as with your doctor:

  • First and foremost, rolling your foot on a frozen water bottle will help ice down the inflammation and give you relief right away from the pain.
  • Over the counter anti inflammatory meds and analgesics will also help with pain management.
  • Custom foot orthotics with built in metatarsal pads are also a very effective non invasive accommodation to the problem.
  • Changing your footwear out of tight fighting or high heeled shoes will make a big difference as well. If you have experienced a large weight gain recently it is not uncommon to experience ball of the foot pain as well.
  • In extreme cases nerve decompression surgery or steroid injections may be prescribed by your doctor.

Best Shoes for Morton’s Neuroma

Do not go around barefoot on hard surfaces if you have Morton’s Neuroma. Try the OOFOS sandal for relief inside your house on hardwood floors. Wearing a shoe with a nice toe spring, rocker sole and a wide and oblique toe box will make a big difference. The Brooks Glycerin, Brooks Ghost and Asics Nimbus are great cushioning shoes with good toe springs.
